PE J Boyd

January 26, 2007

Dear Parents and Students:

I look forward to the 2nd half of the school year, teaching Physical Education at CMS.  We are currently engaged in a basketball unit.  As 2nd semester progresses I will be conducting a tennis unit, a volleyball unit, a fitness unit which will involve various obstacle courses, and lastly, a golf unit.  As an extra-curricular activity I also will be conducting a 3 on 3 basketball tournament that will be open to both boys and girls.

Just as a reminder, please review the importance of responsibility with your child.  This will ensure that your child will.... remember to lock his/her locker, not lose the lock in the process; will..... remember to bring PE clothes with personal name on them, and furthermore will...... treat others and the locker room facility rules with respect.

In closing, please do not hesitate to contact me @ (909) 307 - 5400 X352 should you have any questions and/or concerns. Thank You.... Mr. J. Boyd

Class Announcements
Grading System
Students in my class have the opportunity to earn a total of 5 pts. per day = 25 pts. per week.  There are 9 weeks in each grading period (quarter).  Therefore, the total number of pts. possible in my class for one quater equals 250; 9 X 25 = 250.

Each day a student earns 1pt. for attendance, 1pt. for work habits (dressing out appropriately - see uniform policy, maintaining appropriate stretching and warm up behavior/participation of, 1 pt. for activity participation, and 1 pt. for appropriate social skills - following given instructions and maintaining equality/fairness with fellow students.  If all 4 of those categorial pts. have been earned then the students receives what I call a bonus pt.. The purpose of the bonus pt. is to keep students accountable for all categories since they all play a vital role in the overall scheme of physcial education.  At the start of each quarter students are granted the 225 pts. (100%, A+ Grade).  For the next nine weeks they will either keep the A by maintaining performance, or they will decline in expected performance.

Below is a breakdown of pts. along with percentages that correspond to a letter grade for each individual quarter:

225 - 202 pts. = 100 - 90% = A+ to A-

201 - 180 pts. = 89 - 80% = B+ to B-

179 - 157 pts. = 79 - 70% = C+ to C-

156 - 135 pts. = 69 - 60% = D+ to D-

134 pts. and below = 59% or less = FAIL

Note: Semester grades are two quarter grades averaged together

Clement PE Uniform Policy
Physical Education is required by California State Law.  Students attending Clement are required/expected to follow a uniform policy in physical education.  The policy is as follows:

Students are to dress daily in the Clement PE Uniform - PE shirt and shorts w/ own name on both.  NO JEWELRY of any kind may be worn due to safety and overall class uniformity.  Loaner clothes are available if personal PE clothes are forgotten, etc.  Although, each teacher monitors the number of times students are getting loaner clothes.  After 3X in a quarter grading period, parents will be notified and disciplinary action may take place.

Sweats in pullover style (no hoods, zippers, or logos/stripes) may be worn, either over or under the PE uniform.  Royal blue (school color), navy, or gray are the only 3 colors allowed to be worn.  Should a student report to PE without the proper PE Uniform/Sweats, then he or she is asked to return to the locker room and fix the problem.  If the locker room is already shut/locked, then the student must place the inappropriate items outside the locker room which will not be secured (locked up).

It is expected that all students understand the PE uniform policy at Clement.  Therefore, if a student is infact reporting to PE in inappropriate PE attire, it creates a major problem in the overall PE department.  Our main goal is to create a safe, positive, and structured environment so that all students at Clement have the opportunity for success in physical education.

I Lost My Lock... What Do I Do?
All boys' locks detach from the lockers.  Each student is given a lock to use at the beg. of the school year, or if a student enrolls new to the school.  If their lock is lost, and is not found or turned in to one of the male coaches, they must pay for a new lock for the amount of $6.50. and can be purchased at the administrative office.  Bringing personal locks from home is prohibited because we only use locks with key accessibility.  If a student (boy) uses a locker w/out the security of a lock, then it is likely that items will end up missing, even though we have adequate supervision inside the locker room.
